Fresh Styles for Web Designers – Eye Candy for the
Underground by Curt Cloninger, is the perfect book for any web designer looking for new
inspiration to build into your next piece of creative web genius.
The book looks at 10 different styles of web design in detail, some of which challenge all those usability
heuristics and throw the usability book out the window.
Each style looked at really does give you inspiration for new ideas, although some you would think could
only be used for an artists web site, but Curt Cloninger, the author of this book, also gives examples of
water down versions of each of the groundbreaking styles that are used successfully for corporate web sites.
At the end of each chapter the author of Fresh Styles for Web Designers details techniques for implementing
each of these styles in your own web sites.
The 10 styles looked at in this book are: -
Gothic Organic Style
Grid-Based Icon Style
Lo-Fi Grunge Style
Paper Bag Style
Mondrian Poster Style
Pixelated Punk Rock Style
SuperTiny SimCity Style
HTMinimaLism
Drafting Table/Transformer Style
1950s Hello Kitty Style
I must say that this book is one of the most interesting books I have read in a l
ong time and found that I couldn’t put the book down.
This book is the ideal book for any web designer giving lots of inspiration and challenging all those
usability guidelines that we have been lead to believe we need to follow in order to build a successful
web site. Some of the styles in this book would give usability experts a fit.
If you are a web developer and in need of spicing up your designs then this should be one book you
should read this year, and hopefully we can all look forward to a more varied looking Internet.
